Thoughts about reading
When I was a child I got interested in reading, books, politics, science and the world because all this topics where present in my home. Every morning a newspaper arrived at our home and was lying on the table, accessible for everyone. Every month additional magazines my parents subscribed to arrived and if I walked into the home office of my parents I found shelves of books about various topics.
This way I started to read the newspaper, the magazines got interested in various topics and started to read books.
I wonder if we lose these natural way of discovering all this stuff these days? My daily newspaper is a online subscription I read on my smartphone or tablet, same is true for the magazines I subscribed to. Regarding books, more and more books are ebooks which only exists in my ebook reader or as ebub file in a folder of my computer.
They are hardly visible to everyone beside myself. Regarding the books I have to admit that even for me it is hard to keep an overview what exists in my ebook library and it is way harder to discover stuff than standing in front of a shelf, grab one book, open a few random pages, read a few sentences, grab the next one, etc...
I wonder what this means for our children? How will they discover all the stuff and get interested in news, science, the world and reading in general? Do you already have experience in this regard? How to you make your newspapers, magazines and ebooks accessible and visible to your family?

"When we argue about who is “more pure” or when we tell people that they're bad or evil because they don't use either the same software stack we do, or use the same terminology we do- then we've lost the point of Free Software, which is to spread Freedom."
Well said @Emacsen, I couldn't agree more. I think it is not a #FreeSoftware thing only, especially in the larger #DigitalRights community I see more and more people fighting within their own peer group about details like why A doesn't value detail X as much as B. We should target the 95% out there, instead we get lost in detail within our 5% bubble sometimes.
Software freedom and digital freedom on a more general level is not binary, it is a journey. We should walk this way together and encouraging more people to join us no matter which path they chose, as long as the overall direction is the same.

Chose your tools wisely!
It is understandable that in the current situation companies, governments and schools want to get ready for home office as quick as possible. But don't ignore the long-term effect of your decisions. https://fsfe.org/news/2020/news-20200330-01.html #fsfe #FreeSoftware #HomeOffice #education #COVID19

Nextcloud will prosper and innovate
"Nextcloud [..] is already the most widely deployed on-premises cloud solution. I predict 2020 will be a very good year for this open source solution." Great to see that people put so much trust in #Nextcloud and see the big picture of what we are working on. This is really motivating!

Some meta thoughts about social networking
I really love #Mastodon, it is for me the successor of GNU Social a free, decentralized and open "Twitter-like" social network with the unique chance to become more than just a toy for some geeks.
But what I observe, similar to my Twitter usage: I use it often as a one way tool to publish my thoughts, interesting links, etc. Often I don't engage in discussions or decide to answer with my #Friendica account instead. While 500 chars are enough to publish a initial thought, it is barely enough to have a meaningful discussion about a topic. I'm the only one who feels sometimes to restricted by this arbitrary limit? Aren't this kind of technical limitations of discussions against the purpose of social networking? Maybe Mastodon should get over this Twitter-heritage and find other ways to keep the timeline readable, e.g. "read more" links or something similar...

Since 2002 dozens – maybe even hundreds – of people have devoted years of their life to making Blender open and free to use for everyone. This massive effort has made it a strong and exciting program where add-ons can become massively successful. You’re standing on the shoulders of giants!
This can only work if we create a level playing field for everyone. Nobody’s code is more important than another’s. Nobody cuts a corner of the Blender play field to claim it as their territory. Nobody will plant trees here where you can’t climb in or enjoy its fruits.
Blender is free, forever. https://code.blender.org/2019/06/blender-is-free-software/

•I was annoyed with him constantly requesting that I read it to him and that friction eventually led him to be motivated enough to do it himself.

•To be a bit more serious: Books are still a thing for children. We go to the public library or bookstores to get books for them. They have a lot of them.
For me, I prefer ebooks and digital items most of the time.
